On meteorically stoic Russians

Who has not heard the news by now of a meteor soaring over Chelyabinsk today? One thing my wife noticed as striking from the limited video footage shown so far is how everyone seems to take this event in stride. Vehicle traffic continues unabated. No one runs screaming into the street like lunatics running from Godzilla. In fact, it appears almost as if the event went by unnoticed. Of course it did not. Many people suffered injuries. However, it would seem to appear to help cement the Russian reputation for being rugged and stoic. The images almost seem to suggest that onlookers merely took a moment to look up in the sky, shrug, and state: “Meh, it is only a meteor strike. This is Russia, after all.”
